The #WIunion movement stemming from Wisconsin continues to inspire the nation.
The Hoovervilles of the Great Depression were marks of the failed policies of unregulated speculation which helped lead to the collapse of financial markets. Walkerville, a product of a community-labor collaboration, marks the failure of a budget to provide for its citizens and for the state.
As Walkerville calls attention to the devastating Wisconsin budget cuts, the strategy is being paralleled in New York--likewise based on this Wisconsin inspiration--with Bloombergville:
NO CUTS OR LAYOFFS! MAKE BIG BANKS AND MILLIONAIRES PAY!
Bloomberg's budget is killing New York! Rather than raising taxes on corporations and the rich, he's firing teachers, closing firehouses, cutting CUNY and more. To stop his killer budget, we're going to be sleeping out near City Hall and protesting for as long as it takes!
NYC events are planned throughout the week, and the schedule is available on the No Cuts NY blog. Oh so regrettably I have to miss much of it due to Netroots Nation, but this Wisconsinite turned NYC transplant is loving the interconnections here!
It's clear the passion and perseverance generated by the union protests in Wisconsin (affectionately known as #wiunion and now #walkerville) has spread to an entire generation. No longer will working and middle class Americans stand by as we are attacked; we won't stand, but we will sleep. The inspiration of the Arab Spring, and now of New Yorkers and Wisconsinites will spread like wildfire until we can be assured every citizen of the world has a shot at a decent lifestyle.
Clear indeed, and here's to spreading the movement like wildfire at these tent city sleep-ins!
